The laid back slow and melancholy mood peppered here and there in every episode of the original is not in the new one, the music is not memorable if it is different, and it’s just slightly remixed same-olds if it is not. Spike is a smarmy asshole rather than a suave and chill guy, Faye has been given the feminist stereotype overcompensating boss-girl treatment, and Jet Black is the most spot on voice, body, and character for the character (and he’s black skinned, which means nothing in the show). Does the new show have any of this? No, and I was not surprised that it didn’t. I liked the art style, the dub is certainly one of the best made to this day (it’s better than the Japanese), and the general mood was my kind of vibe. I like Cowboy Bebop, it is a show which does have some nostalgic quality to it in that I remember my teenage years marked here and there by catching an episode every so often on Adult Swim. Virtually no one expected it to be good, the most they could hope was that it was ok and had a few iconic classic moments-just live action. The question was for most people more about what would be cut out, condensed, or changed for the non-anime loving normie audiences to not feel alienated by the cultural quirks of the Moon people. Anyone who would give the very notion of such an attempt a few thoughts knew there wasn’t a way in hell this would be a 1:1 faithful adaptation. You have been warned.Īfter a decade of rumors swirling around in the toilet that is the anime side of the internet a Western live action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop has finally happened, and it is probably for the best that Keanu Reeves was not involved in any way. The following spoils details of the show.
